Mantra

Mantra, Oil and Acrylic on canvas, 2012

I began work on this piece yesterday and it’s almost finished. I just need to add more gradient changes between the light (white) bits and the dark (colour) bits. This piece is a lot darker, literally and figuratively. For some reason my paintings of Christian monuments, statues, churches, etc, come out much ‘darker’ than others. I am not religious in any sense. I am a strict athiest. But these religious images and depictions tie in with my theme of decay and dereliction. Nothing lasts forever – and that hopefully will include religion.

I know all the arguments for religion. And if it brings you happiness then thats good. But your hope, salvation, truth and love may be someone else’s misery, enslavement, suicide bombing and hatred. It is an outdated belief system that has no answers and only raises more questions about ourselves. It divides, causes sectarian violence, war and unevolving ignorance through fear of death and eternal punishment. Churches (especially the vatican and its tax-free banking status) hoard money, while 2/3 of the world are impoverished or starving.

Understanding, peace, love, unity and all those other things that religion is supposed to hold the key to can be achieved by you – not God, Jesus, Krishna, Buddha, Vishnu, Joseph Smith or the ghost of Elvis Presly. You are your own God – you create your own destiny.
